What to write on a headstone inscription

An inscription can say anything you want it to. At a minimum, they usually include the person’s full name, their date of birth and their date of death.

The main elements of an inscription are:

  1. Opening phrase e.g., In loving memory
  2. Name of your loved one (full name or nickname if appropriate, maiden name if appropriate)
  3. Date of birth and death
  4. Relationship with your loved one (sometimes the names of immediate family and their relationship with the loved one are included).
  5. Closing phrase e.g., Rest Peacefully

Many families also choose to include quotes from scripture or poetry, or a short description of the loved one.

Advice on writing an inscription

  • "Less is more" - we recommend short and concise
  • Enduring - inscriptions should be timeless and not overly sentimental
